After sweeping the elimination round with a perfect 14-0 record, the UE Red Warriors suffered its first loss. And what a way to suffer its first defeat, right at Game 1 of Season 70 UAAP Finals. DLSU Green Archers edged out UE Red Warriors 64-63.
It was a sorry loss for the University of the East, booking the first Finals seat thru their perfect 14-0 elimination record. UE had not won a title for almost two decades now. Now they are on the brink of another year of failing to bag a title. Unless they can force a Game 3, they might have a chance of ending their title drought.
Ty Tang starred for DLSU with 14 points. Tang started burning the hoops at the start of fourth quarter with nine straight points De La Salle defense was so tough it resulted to 31 turnovers for UE. The game was neck to neck up until the final seconds. DLSU was leading 63-60 when Mark Borboran fired a booming triple to tie the score for the last time. In the next play Ty Tang missed a shot, but the rebound was collared by Rico Maierfhofer and tried to follow up with a put back but was fouled. Rico Maierhofer missed his first free throw and made his second to make it 64-63. In UE’s last play, both Mark Borboran and Marcy Arellano missed a game winning shot. From then on, Green and White colored people of De La Salle started celebrating.
Having the momentum, DLSU can wrap it up Sunday with another win. Playing more games after the elimination, first was a playoff for second spot which they eventually won and the next two was for the second Finals seat where they beat the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles, I think the experienced gained on those games have toughened up the DLSU Green Archers.
After ruling the Nike Summer League and Fil-Oil Tournament, they are just one away from adding another title at their belt, unless the Red Warriors came out with one big fight. Expect the Red Warriors to come with more intensity in their next game.
