RIVERMAYA headed for DOOM

Is the band on a downfall when the famous frontman or vocalist leaves the group? I think that’s about what to happen to Rivermaya. After having hits after hits, Rico Blanco has left the band. Leaving the other members in the dark.

Rivermaya was the second biggest band of the 90’s, next to Eraserheads in the Philippines. Bamboo was still their leading vocalist then and Rico Blanco was only second man. With energetic moves every time they performed, the crowd goes wild. Plus their song were also well written, properly arranged and got some catchy tunes. My favorite was 214. I thought some foreign band sang it, only to be surprised that it was Rivermaya.

On the height of their popularity, Bamboo left the band. Rumor has it, Bamboo and Rico were fighting as who would sing the songs. Jealousy among the member, spark. After a brief absensce in the music scene, Rivermaya was back. This time Rico Blanco pick up the cudgels to lead the group. Rivermaya made a historical comeback, seldom does that it happens when the lead vocalist leaves, the band dies.

Now the bad news, Rico Blanco is out of the group. And now their record company, manager and TV station Studio 23 has come out with a new show. Rivermaya : Bagong Liwanag the search for the new lead vocalist of the group.

Although it was not an original concept, they copied it from ROCKSTAR INXS. The remaining finalist are not that worth as same as Bamboo or Rico. The shoes are too big to fill in for the finalist. They don’t have the energy, the charisma and the vocal prowess that the former two vocalists had.

They should have at least disbanded the band, Rivermaya has too many hits and I think those are enough already. They already made a mark in Philippine Music History.

PBA OPENS 33RD SEASON

The PBA opens its 33rd season last Sunday. With some new rules and rookies to watch out for, PBA seems to be promising this season. What excite me about the opening season are the muses of each team. My favorite muse or I must say were Marianne Rivera of Talk N Text and Iwa Moto of Barangay Ginebra, their beauty and figure were jaw dropping and they are oozing with lots of sex appeal. Pokwang just ruined the opening with her not so funny antics and she just don’t fit as a muse for Coke or any other team.

Magnolia, formerly known as San Miguel Beer, blasted Air 21 on opening day. With a deep roster loaded with a lot of talent, expect Magnolia to reach the Finals. Already loaded with lot of stars in their line up, Magnolia added Larry Fonacier from Red Bull and rookie Jonas Villanueva from FEU. Back are Danny Seigle and Dondon Hontiveros after suiting up for the National team in a disappointing finish in FIBA Asia.

Earlier tonight, Purefoods won over Sta. Lucia Realtors. Talk N Text winning over Alaska Aces. With an injury free lineup, Purefoods has shown what they are capable of when they are healthy. Although I might add that Sta. Lucia Realtors are full of rookies and some acquisition from other teams most importantly Joseph Yeo. Talk N Text beat their last conference tormentor, Alaska Aces. Asi Taulava, Ren Ren Ritualo and Jimmy Alapag are back in the line up of the Phone Pals. High scoring of Willie Miller went into naught as the Aces dropped their opening game.

On Friday we’ll have the chance how will Joe De Vance, this year’s top pick, fair up as the Welcoat Dragons goes up against Coca Cola Tigers. But after that, bring in the whole gang, no I mean the entire neighborhood, it will be Barangay Ginebra’s first game. The Fast and the Furious duo of Barangay Ginebra have return. Expect Ginebra to walk freely against Red Bull. I think Red Bull is throwing in a lot of good players these year with the likes of Enrico Villanueva, Lordy Tugade and Larry Fonacier.

The PBA may have lost its glory days, but expect that to return soon as there are lot more local player drafted than Fil-Am these year. And if the Big J comes back as coach or commissioner, expect people to troop to the games once again.

Prepare to be Knock out by ..KNOCKED UP

After becoming the sleeper hit in the summer in the US, Knocked Up is coming to Philippine soil. It is the very opposite of the other chick flick or comedy you’ve seen before. Knocked up is a blast of fresh mountain breeze.

Its about Pot smoking slacker Ben (Seth Rogen) meets up and coming entertainment journalist beauty Alison (Katherine Heigl of TV’s Grey Anatomy) at a bar in L.A., and the two get drunk together. Sex happens. Ben and Alison experience misunderstanding about the use of condoms. Conception happens. Alison, no longer drunk, chooses to go through with pregnancy and raise child, even if dad is a baggy man-boy who lives with stoned roommates.

Ben doesn't exactly choose to grow up — he remains convinced of his status as ''the guy girls fucks over.'' But by the time Judd Apatow's ( the one who also directed The 40 Year Old Virgin )extremely rude, extremely funny, irresistible fairy tale about contemporary American shagging, childbirth classes, comes to its sunny, satisfying conclusion, the slack has become a responsible man. Knocked Up is comic chicken soup for the yuppie soul who likes partying at the bar.

The movie has an uncanny empathy not just for dorks who like pictures of naked boobs, but for the gender that comes equipped with those boobs, too. Knocked Up may be the cleverest, most up-to-date commentary on current pop culture.

F word also does it for Knocked Up, I lost count at how many times they say FUCK in this movie. This movie is just so fucking great, so fucking see it.

First glimpse at IRON MAN

Following the success of other Marvel superheroes, Iron Man is the next Marvel Comic Book Hero to jump to the big screen. Due out in May next year.

I think it's about time that they bring this superhero into the big screen with the advancement in CGI technology. Costume was created byAcademy Award winner Stan Winston which remains faithful to the comic books.

It stars Robert Downey Jr. as playboy industrialist Tony Stark and Gwyneth Paltrow as his assistant. Directed by Jan Favreau who also directed ELF. Let's just wait if Robert Downey Jr. fit the bill for Iron Man. With a great script and how the film is made, expect Iron Man to break box office record next year.

Seach no more...here's BIG GIRLS DONT CRY by Fergie

Sing a long with Fergie with her biggest hit so far. Here's the one you're looking for....

BIG GIRLS DONT CRY by Fergie..

Da Da Da Da
The smell of your skin lingers on me now
You're probably on your flight back to your home town
I need some shelter of my own protection baby
To be with myself and center, clarity
Peace, Serenity

[CHORUS:]
I hope you know,I hope you know
That this has nothing to do with you
It's personal, myself and
IWe've got some straightenin' out to do
And I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket
But I've got to get a move on with my life
It's time to be a big girl now
And big girls don't cry
Don't cryDon't cryDon't cry

The path that I'm walking
I must go alone
I must take the baby steps 'til
I'm full grown, full grown
Fairytales don't always have a happy ending, do they?
And I foresee the dark ahead if I stay

[ Repeat CHORUS]

Like the little school mate in the school yard
We'll play jacks and uno cards
I'll be your best friend and you'll be my Valentine
Yes you can hold my hand if you want to'Cause
I want to hold yours too
We'll be playmates and lovers and share our secret worlds
But it's time for me to go home
It's getting late, dark outside
I need to be with myself and center, clarity
Peace, Serenity

[Repeat CHORUS]

La Da Da Da Da Da

Watch out for more songs in the future or you can put in your request at the comment.

DLSU BAGS UAAP TITLE..... PACQUIAO DOMINATES BARRERA

De La Salle University captured its seventh title in the UAAP. The Green Archers went on to win Game 2 of the UAAP Finals and capture this year’s UAAP crown with a 73-64 win over the UE Red Warriors.

It was vindication for DLSU Green Archers after being suspended last year. It was a fitting for goodbye for veterans Ty Tang and Cholo Villanueva who are on their last year in the UAAP.

Leading at the half with 34-23 lead over UE. The Archers were threatened with a blistering 10-0 run by UE capped by back to back triples of rookie Paul Lee. But DLSU juggernaut cannot be stopped by the Red Warriors posting a 52-45 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

UE Red Warriors started the forth quarter with back to back triples to come close at 52-51, but an off balance three point shot by JV Casio and a three point play by Malaves put the Archers at 58-51. UE got closed within 61-59 but instead of just tying the ballgame, the Red Warriors were hurrying with three point shots which they badly missed.

The experienced squad of DLSU Green Archers simply prevailed over the UE Red Warriors, who just can’t seem to have any luck over their post elimination game.
It was another sorry year for the UE Red Warriors, after dominating the elimination round with a 14-0 record, they fumbled when it matters most.

Let’s stay away from basketball this time, Manny Pacquiao simply outclassed Marco Antonio Barrera in their fight at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Although Manny Pacquiao did not knock down Barrera in their fight, Pacquiao was so dominant that Barrera got a cut below the eye. Manny Pacquiao retains his WBC Super Bantamweight Title with a unanimous decision.

The fight was marred by the cheating of Barrera, who still hits Pacquiao after they were stopped by the referee. Dirty Tactics by Barrera, whoa dude, you should fight fair and square. It only means one thing Manny PACMAN Pacquiao Rules!!!!!!!!!!

a touchdown by....WE ARE MARSHALL

Football. The game almost everybody loves mainly to its body smashing and emotions every game. Based on a true story the film “ We Are Marshall ” depicts the flight of the 1970’s football team of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.

After the plane crash that wiped out Marshall’s beloved football team, The Thundering Herd. The entire town of Huntington was in grief losing sons, brothers, fathers and mothers. With the death of almost the entire team, the University’s Board of Director plans to suspend the football team. But with Nate Ruffin, one of the remaining football player, and some students drive to keep the team, the University President Don Dedmon finally decided to keep the team and the program.

With no one willing to coach the team, Jack Lengyel portrayed by Matthew McConaughey came to their feet to coach the team and build the team from scratch with the help of Assistant Coach Red Dawson played by Matthew Fox.

They had some difficulties recruiting players, most of the players they recruited are from different various field of sports. University President Don Dedmon had a hard time appealing to the NCAA to make some exemption to allow them to play college freshman after what happen to their team, but got rejected each time he appeals. Until Jack told him to approach to them personally because like what he always says, there’s a first time for everything.

The film keeps you cheering for the team against their opponent who are much more experienced, stronger and older. Teaches us how to overcome adversity to our life, if you get knock down, you have to get up just like football. Winning is everything for the Thundering Herd before the fatal crash. But when Jack came, it’s not about winning or losing, it’s not about how you play the game, but just playing the game and keeping the program alive.

This film is a beautifully crafted drama directed by McG, scores one big emotional touchdown, keeping the school spirit alive. You’ll also hear some great songs from the 70’s.

If you like football and drama, NBC’s Friday Night Lights and Remember the Titans, this one’s for you. We Are…. Marshall!!!!!

UE RED WARRIORS...PERFECT RECORD...NO MORE

After sweeping the elimination round with a perfect 14-0 record, the UE Red Warriors suffered its first loss. And what a way to suffer its first defeat, right at Game 1 of Season 70 UAAP Finals. DLSU Green Archers edged out UE Red Warriors 64-63.

It was a sorry loss for the University of the East, booking the first Finals seat thru their perfect 14-0 elimination record. UE had not won a title for almost two decades now. Now they are on the brink of another year of failing to bag a title. Unless they can force a Game 3, they might have a chance of ending their title drought.

Ty Tang starred for DLSU with 14 points. Tang started burning the hoops at the start of fourth quarter with nine straight points De La Salle defense was so tough it resulted to 31 turnovers for UE. The game was neck to neck up until the final seconds. DLSU was leading 63-60 when Mark Borboran fired a booming triple to tie the score for the last time. In the next play Ty Tang missed a shot, but the rebound was collared by Rico Maierfhofer and tried to follow up with a put back but was fouled. Rico Maierhofer missed his first free throw and made his second to make it 64-63. In UE’s last play, both Mark Borboran and Marcy Arellano missed a game winning shot. From then on, Green and White colored people of De La Salle started celebrating.

Having the momentum, DLSU can wrap it up Sunday with another win. Playing more games after the elimination, first was a playoff for second spot which they eventually won and the next two was for the second Finals seat where they beat the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles, I think the experienced gained on those games have toughened up the DLSU Green Archers.

After ruling the Nike Summer League and Fil-Oil Tournament, they are just one away from adding another title at their belt, unless the Red Warriors came out with one big fight. Expect the Red Warriors to come with more intensity in their next game.

GOT A BALL.. GOT A GAME

Just got a copy of the latest game from EA Sports, NBA Live 08. It’s always exciting when you got a new game to play. NBA Live 08 has Gilbert Arenas , with his gold and black Wizards uniform, on the cover. Whereas EA Sports always have new player on each year of their NBA game franchise.

The rosters are accurate as of July 26, 2007 which is still too early for some players to get contract or be signed up. Some teams actually has five or more spots on their roster vacant, but if you look at their free agent pool there are players who now have teams to play and you just finish your roster management and your ready to go. This is the beauty of this game, compare to other NBA games, here you can sign up and trade players.

Voice over announcers, Marv Albert and Steve Kerr, are still the same just as last year with also some dialogue repeating from last year NBA Live 07. EA should have at least updated this portion. Graphics and camera angle are much better this year compare to last year game.

No X-factor mode this time, but you got a Player Hot spots where the red spots indicate that the player has a higher probability of making the shot. You just need to view each player with his Hot Spot. NBA All Star weekend mode, freestyle challenge mode are still there. This year’s EA trax is not that bad at all, although I prefer last year’s trax, Hip hopping beat to the full.

What surprise me in this game is the FIBA World Championship Mode and the inclusion of international teams from last year FIBA World Championship like Spain, Argentina, Italy, Greece, Germany, France, China and of course USA. I tried pitting Spain against China, and I lost by a twenty point margin, it will probably take a lot of time to master the moves of those Spaniards Ballers. Boards was dominated by Yao Ming and Wang Zhi Zhi, Pau Gasol and Garbajosa are outrebounded in that game. Team USA is the strongest team with a power rank of 96 compare to other international team. Maybe next year they should include all the countries that participated in the FIBA,that would be cool. It makes you feel like your playing for your country.

On a rating of 1 to 10, I’ll rate this one 7.5

LOST.......IN REVIEW

From the very first episode of LOST in season 1 to its finale in season 2, the show is just explosive. Keep you glued to the boob tube and clamoring for more.

4,8,15,16,23 and 42 these numbers are history as same with the hatch, But who knows, maybe the writers will still come up with these numbers again in season 4, considering that it is connected to Hurley ( Jorge Garcia ).

Season 3 started brutally, with Sawyer ( Josh Halloway ) being tortured. The show just makes you wanna kill one of them hostiles, just show how bad these hostiles are.

My favorite episode would have to be the one where Hurley found a van along with some beer and a dead driver( which we would later found out that it was Benjamin’s Dad). That episode is just so heartwarming, despite all of their difficulties, dangers they’ve experienced in the island, they still manage to put a smile in their face and have some fun.

As for Kate ( Evangeline Lily), she’s now torn between Sawyer and Jack ( Matthew Fox) , although she made out with Sawyer in his cage, which Jack saw and was jealous of. Keeps you guessing who really likes, although at the season finale, Jack admits to Kate that he loves her, which somehow that scene thrilled my wife.

It’s also saddening that my favorite little hobbit on the show, Charlie ( Dominic Monaghan ) died at the season finale, well everything happens for a reason in the island as the cliché goes. My family will surely miss his character.

The back story got me confused a little bit, I thought I’m seeing Jack in the past, but lo and behold, it was not a back story instead were seeing the future of what happens to him after being rescued. He looks haggard, sort of a nut case with a beard. I must commend the show for the twist in its story and how it was delivered.

Season 3 answered a lot of question like where did Benjamin and Juliet came from. We found out that Benjamin Dad was working with Dharma Initiative and that he was the reason why these Dharma people was wiped out.

Season 3 left me a lot of question ; Who are these hostiles and where do they come from ? If it wasn’t Desmond girlfriend, then who are the people who will rescue them? And of course my important question is at the future story, why did Jack tell Kate that they have to go back?

I’m feeling LOST right now, can’t wait for Season 4 till next year and also its release on DVD this fall, I wonder if what are the special features.

SPIDERMAN 3 OUT NOW ON DVD

Yo!!! Web slinger fans out there, got some good news for you, Spiderman 3 is now out on DVD on Philippine shores. I think were even ahead in the US.

Its distributors released two versions. First version is the single disc which contains only the film and cost around P 595.00 comes free with a calendar or a mini poster I think.

The Second version is the two disc special edition. First disc contains the film, the second disc contains all the good stuff that Spidey fans will surely like. Second disc contains the special features like Bloopers/Outtakes, Deleted scenes, making of the film, how the special effects are made and a lot more. It also contains Snow Patrol’s Signal Fire music video. It’s priced around P 895.00 so it’s a good catch.

So for Spidey fans like me and my son, grab a copy now. I prefer the two disc edition. These complete my Spiderman DVD collection.

One remark about Spiderman 3, the filmmakers should have made Venom ( Topher Grace ) appearance and fight with Spiderman longer.

If you havent seen it cinemas, now’s your chance to see it. Spiderman 3 stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.
